This past weekend, Guiding Paws of Delaware took a scenic and educational trip to Pea Patch Island, home to Fort Delaware State Park. Our pups-in-training, along with their dedicated handlers, boarded the ferry and enjoyed the breezy ride across the Delaware River—an adventure in itself!
Once on the island, we hopped on a quick tram ride as knowledgeable state park staff gave shared interesting facts about the park’s history and wildlife. We explored the historic fort, walked the nature trails, and took in the sights and sounds of the marshlands. The variety of terrain, wildlife, and period actors provided a rich sensory experience for our dogs. From the clanging of the blacksmith’s tools to the echoing voices inside the fort’s stone walls, each moment was a chance for our pups to build confidence and adaptability in new environments.
Trips like these are invaluable for our future guide dogs. Exposure to different surfaces, sounds, smells, and social settings helps them develop the calm, focused demeanor they’ll need to support their future partners. We’re incredibly grateful to the staff at Fort Delaware State Park for welcoming us so warmly and making our visit smooth and memorable.
