We are Guiding Paws of Delaware, a Seeing Eye puppy‑raising club based in New Castle County. Our community includes dedicated puppy raisers, their families, and volunteer puppy sitters who work together to prepare young dogs for a future as guide dogs with The Seeing Eye. Founded in 1929 and located in Morristown, New Jersey, The Seeing Eye is the oldest existing guide dog school in the world. The program relies on volunteers to nurture puppies during their first year of life, helping them build confidence, good manners, and social skills. Puppy raisers can be as young as nine years old or adults of any age, and many families choose to raise a puppy together for shared support and experience.

Training

Our club meets once per month for an in-person meeting. Our raisers do a “training circle” activity with their puppies to develop their skills and confidence. The dogs learn basic commands.

Puppies at a club meeting are practicing the “down” and “rest” command. From front to back, puppies pictured are Timmy, Arrow, Phoenix, and Ella.
Additionally, our club organizes monthly outings. These outings expose puppies to diverse social environments, like shopping malls, movie theaters, museums, parks, and more.
